Retired Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Max Wisot shot and killed himself in his Long Beach home Monday afternoon, police said. He was 83.

Wisot, a prominent criminal attorney before his 1963 appointment to the Municipal Court bench by former Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, was believed to have been despondent over failing health.

Wisot retired in 1978 from the Long Beach Superior Court bench to which Brown had appointed him in 1965.

On the bench his rulings ranged from the legality of Laetrile as a cancer cure to election disputes within the Economic and Youth Opportunities Agency.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, two sons and a daughter.
