PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Young Back at End, With a Future

Robert Young, a second-year defensive lineman who has been waiting for a chance at defensive end, might get it Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons in the season finale.

Young, a pass-rushing end in college, began the season as the starting left defensive end. But he missed the first four games because of a sore shoulder, and when he came back, the Rams decided to use him as a backup defensive tackle.

With highly touted rookies Sean Gilbert and Marc Boutte there, Young did not appear to have a significant future with the Rams in the interior line.

But Thursday, Coach Chuck Knox said Young could get major playing time Sunday as the right defensive end, and that his future might be on the outside, after all.

“I think he can play either (position),” Knox said.

The Rams need ends more than they need tackles, Knox added.

Receiver Aaron Cox was moved from injured reserve to the practice squad, meaning he could be activated for Sunday. Cox has missed the last four games because of hamstring problems. . . . Knox said the only lineup change he is planning is to use rookie Todd Kinchen as the punt returner instead of Emile Harry. . . . There were 25,742 tickets left unsold for Sunday’s game by the 72-hour deadline, meaning the game will be blacked out locally.
