Recycling Christmas Trees

Recycle your Christmas tree by participating in a local collection and recycling program and thus give it a productive future life. Trees will be collected at curbside from Los Angeles residents who receive the city’s automated refuse collection service. This collection will be Jan. 11 to Jan. 15.

Others can pick up coupons for a free bag of compost and discounts to “Tropical Rain Forest,” an IMAX film, when trees are dropped off after the base, decorations and tinsel have been removed from Saturday to Jan. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at these locations: Encino: Balboa Sport Center, 17015 Burbank Blvd. Sunland: Sunland Park and Recreation Center, 8651 Foothill Blvd. For more information, call 1-800-773-CITY

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, a local special district that runs landfills, has organized a countywide program with most cities participating. Call your city or the Sanitation Districts, (310) 699-7411 or (800) 552-5218, for more information on a local Christmas tree recycling program scheduled on the weekend of Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, trees can be dropped off at various sites including:

Topanga Canyon :Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District Office, 122 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. Participants will receive a coupon for a free bag of potting soil as well as a discount coupon for the California Museum of Science & Industry’s IMAX Theater.

Beginning Wednesday and continuing through Jan. 31, live Christmas trees can be dropped off for replanting by the Boy Scouts from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at these locations: Canoga Park: 8900 DeSoto Ave. Canyon Country: Southeast corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Luther Drive. Newhall: 25897 San Fernando Road Palmdale: Antelope Valley Mall, 1233 W. Ave. P Sherman Oaks: 15451 Ventura Blvd. Woodland Hills: Boething Treeland Nursery, 23475 Long Valley Road. In addition, the city of Santa Clarita will be replanting donated live Christmas trees that can be dropped off from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at the city’s Field Services Office, 25663 Ave. Stanford.
