On a night when the Pittsburgh Penguins could manage only a tie, Mario Lemieux was a big winner once again.

With a highlight-film goal and an assist, Lemieux reached 100 points at the second-fastest pace of his career and fourth-fastest pace in NHL history. But the Penguins had to rally to tie the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-3, at Pittsburgh Thursday.

Lemieux needed one point to reach 100 points for the eighth time--and got it before the first period was over.

Lemieux took Ron Francis’ pass near the red line and fended off repeated checks from defenseman Dmitri Mironov to dribble a shot past Grant Fuhr for a shorthanded goal at 17:30.

“What do you expect? It was a great play by the best player in the world,” Pittsburgh’s Shawn McEachern said.

Lemieux has 37 goals and 64 assists in 37 games. Wayne Gretzky reached 100 points in 34 games in 1983-84 and in 35 games in 1984-85. Lemieux reached 100 in 36 games in 1988-89.

Calgary 5, Montreal 3--Michel Petit, returning to Calgary’s lineup for the first time since Oct. 22, scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period at Calgary as the Flames won this battle of first-place teams.

Petit, a defenseman sidelined for more than two months because of a dislocated shoulder, scored at 9:09 on a long shot that deflected over goalie Patrick Roy to break a 2-2 tie and trigger a three-goal burst in a span of 2:57. Calgary increased its unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1).

Detroit 5, Ottawa 4--Sheldon Kennedy’s goal 28 seconds into overtime at Detroit spared the Red Wings the humiliation of being the first team to lose to the expansion Senators at home.

The Senators, 0-19 on the road, trailed, 4-1, early in the third period, but tied the game on goals by Jeff Lazaro, Dave Archibald and Sylvain Turgeon.

Buffalo 11, NY Rangers 6--Alexander Mogilny recorded his third hat trick in his last nine games and Yuri Khmylev also scored three goals at Buffalo.

Mogilny, Buffalo’s leading scorer with 33 goals, has 16 goals in his last nine games and eight in his last three.

Quebec 6, Hartford 2--Scott Pearson scored twice and Mats Sundin added his 25th goal of the season and set two goals at Hartford as the Nordiques won their fourth game in a row.

The Nordiques, 9-2-1 since Dec. 7, handed the Whalers their third consecutive loss. Hartford has been outscored, 21-8, during its slide.

Minnesota 5, Boston 3--Dave Gagner keyed a second-period run with a goal and an assist at Bloomington, Minn., as the North Stars extended Boston’s losing streak to three games.

Winnipeg 3, Edmonton 2--Evgeny Davydov’s tiebreaking goal at 3:26 of the third period gave the Jets the victory at Winnipeg.

Fredrik Olausson and Phil Housley also scored for Winnipeg, which moved two points ahead of Edmonton into sole possession of fourth place in the Smythe Division.

Chicago 5, Tampa Bay 0--Ed Belfour, routed by Tampa Bay in the Lightning’s first game in October, atoned by stopping 22 shots for his league-leading fifth shutout at Chicago.

Belfour faced only four shots in each of the first two periods, then made 14 stops in the final period as Blackhawks beat the Lightning for the first time in three games.

St. Louis 5, NY Islanders 1--Brett Hull, stopped on a first-period penalty shot, still scored twice and Curtis Joseph stopped 40 shots at St. Louis. The victory ended a three-game home losing streak for the Blues. The Islanders lost their second consecutive game.
