SOUTH COUNTY : Councils to Discuss Train Station Sites
The city councils from Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills and Mission Viejo will hold a workshop Wednesday to discuss possible locations for a new train station linking South County commuters to Los Angeles.
The meeting will be the first of its kind among the three cities, which are nearest to the future location of a Metrolink rail station.
A presentation will be given by representatives of Boyle Engineering, a consulting firm hired by Mission Viejo to perform a site selection study.
The Metrolink station would augment current Amtrak services. Currently, there is a daily Metrolink round trip between San Clemente and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.
The first site under consideration is the Galavan Retarding Basin, in Laguna Niguel on Cabot Road near Interstate 5 and bordering Laguna Hills. The second site is in Mission Viejo, sandwiched between the freeway and Cabot Road, just north of Pacific Park Drive.
Two other sites under consideration are also near Interstate 5, between La Paz Road and Alicia Parkway, bordering Laguna Hills.
The cost of building the station and a parking lot is estimated at $2.5 million, plus about $100,000 in annual maintenance. Up to $1.3 million of the costs could be paid with Proposition 116 funds.
The public meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at Design Center South, 23811 Aliso Creek Road, Laguna Niguel.
