LYON, France — A European cable television news channel, aiming to compete with Cable News Network in the Continent, began broadcasting Friday to coincide with the start of the European Community’s single market.
Euronews, a Lyon-based channel, will be broadcast in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish and plans eventually to reach 40 million homes in the 12-nation EC.
The first broadcast image showed London’s Big Ben striking midnight and signalling the start of the single market aimed at lifting border controls on individuals, goods and services throughout the EC.
