Hire a Casting Director

In fall, 1991, I produced and directed my first feature film, a romantic comedy titled “Loving Lulu.” Produced under the Screen Actors Guild low-budget agreement, which allows for performers to be paid at a lower rate than a multimillion-dollar show, “Loving Lulu” offered a substantive role for a female lead. Agents and managers knew there was no chance at a huge salary, rather the opportunity at a challenging role.

Helping give the project viability and providing excellent casting choices was Barbara Remsen, CSA, whose reputation brought bags full of submissions, many on the fabled “A” list. In my meetings with potential Lulus, all were excited by the material and supported that it was intended to be a “small” film. Agents were most cooperative, and, in fact, the two male leads came from agent suggestions.

I believe a project with good intentions offering fair compensation for performers and technicians, realistic time and money and with a production team intent on their goal will have the potential for delivering a quality product.
