Sanchez Vicario Wins One for Spain
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario led Spain in the $490,000 Hopman Cup team tennis championship at Perth, Australia, today with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Switzerland.
Sunday night, Nathalie Tauziat and Guy Forget lifted France over Israel to a place in the quarterfinals.
Tauziat beat Anna Smashnova, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening women’s singles, but Forget had to beat Amos Mansdorf, 6-2, 6-7 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2), after being a break down in the final set. The French added a mixed doubles victory, 8-1.
The fifth-seeded France advanced to a match against fourth-seeded Americans MaliVai Washington and Mary Joe Fernandez, who had a first-round bye.
Earlier, brother-sister combination Andrei Medvedev and Natalia Medvedeva gave Ukraine a 2-1 victory over seventh-seeded Austria. Ukraine will face the top-seeded German combination of Michael Stich and Steffi Graf.
