BENEFIT : Concert for the Cravens

When Robin Gable heard that her friend Ron Craven was about to lose his home after falling behind on the mortgage during a long jobless streak, she figured something had to be done.

“It’s just been one piece of bad luck after another. . . . It could be any of us,” as Gable put it during a phone interview. “He’s talking about splitting the family up, and when he mentioned that, I just decided I had to do something.”

A singer and songwriter, Gable has organized a concert to raise money to help her friend of 15 years, and maybe prevent foreclosure on his house in Dana Point. Although Craven is working now, he used all of his savings during several periods of unemployment following the loss of his longtime job selling computer accessories.

The concert takes place Friday in Saddleback College’s McKinney Theatre. In addition to Gable--who describes her own music as easy-listening in a James Taylor vein--performers will include Greg and Margie Kirken, who play Celtic, bluegrass and Appalachian folk music; Gregory Coleman, a classical guitarist; and Vocalworks, who do jazz from the ‘20s through the ‘40s.

“It’s kind of an eclectic evening,” Gable said. “A little something for everybody.”
