DIGEST : Ventura’s Curry Named WSC’s Player of Week

Calvin Curry of Ventura College has been selected as the men’s Western State Conference basketball player of the week.

Curry, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Compton High, scored 65 points in three games to lead Ventura (21-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, to the championship of the Hancock tournament. Curry is averaging 21.6 points and 6.3 rebounds.

The Agoura High girls’ cross-country team, which won its third consecutive state Division I title, is ranked second in The Harrier magazine’s final national poll behind Bend (Ore.) High.

The Chargers were ranked second in 1990 behind Mountain View High in Orem, Utah, before winning the mythical national championship last season.

Hart (fourth) leads three area boys’ teams that were ranked among the top 25. Thousand Oaks, the Southern Section Division I champion, is ranked sixth, and Marmonte League rival Agoura is 17th.

Hart, last year’s national champion, lost to Thousand Oaks in two of three meetings this season, but the Indians defeated the Lancers, 53-80, to win their third consecutive state Division I title.

The Cal State Northridge baseball team is ranked 25th nationally by Collegiate Baseball magazine in its preseason top 40. Cal State Fullerton is ranked eighth, Pepperdine ninth, Cal State Long Beach 11th, USC 12th and UCLA 14th.
