Ventura police on Saturday said they arrested a man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly struck another motorist’s car with an ax following an accident on the Ventura Freeway.

Steven Warner, 46, of Ventura gave himself up without incident at 6:20 p.m., about an hour after police learned of his whereabouts in a vehicle repair shop at 191 W. Stanley Ave. in western Ventura, police said.

Police said they sent numerous squad cars to the scene because an officer had reported seeing a man in a window of the building with a shotgun in each hand. Officers found a cache of about 20 rifles, shotguns and handguns, police said.

Rodney Russell, 28, of Ventura told police that Warner had been trying to ram his car for more than a mile on the Ventura Freeway, police said. Russell and Warner pulled over to the shoulder, and Warner allegedly took an ax to Russell’s car and then left the scene before police arrived, police said.

Police said they found the head of an ax embedded in the hood of the car driven by Russell and that the two men were acquaintances.

Warner was taken to County Jail and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
