HOLDING STEADY: Huntington Beach officials have been watching the recent storms with some confidence--finally. . . It was just such weather four years ago that clipped the end off the old pier and finally caused it to close. The new pier, opened in July higher and sturdier, seems to be withstanding its first battering just fine, thank you. “It would take a 40-foot wave to wash over the top and, even then, the pier could take it,” bragged Bob Eichblatt, city engineer.
