Hawthorne police have arrested two gang members in the shooting of Martin Hernandez, a promising high school athlete whose dreams of being a police officer were dashed when a bullet left him paralyzed.
Investigators arrested an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old Monday afternoon in the shooting of Inglewood residents Hernandez and 18-year-old Anthony Wong, who is recovering from a leg wound.
Hernandez and Wong were leaving a party in Hawthorne Friday night when gang members opened fire, hitting them both. Police said the victims were innocent bystanders. The suspects, whose identities were not immediately released pending further investigation, were booked on suspicion of attempted murder, said Hawthorne police Lt. Arvid Krueger.
Krueger said a motive has not been established. “It seems to be a random thing,” he said.
