HUNTINGTON BEACH : Sowers School Pupils Get National Honors
Students at Isaac L. Sowers Middle School have won national recognition for service to the community.
The school was honored by Youth Service America and the Point of Light Foundation in Washington for a range of community activities performed in 1992.
Among other achievements, Sowers pupils raised $8,388 in the March of Dimes Walk America campaign, more than any other grade school or high school in Orange County, officials said.
Sowers pupils regularly visit the elderly at convalescent homes, sing carols and perform skits at the Michael E. Rodgers Senior Citizen Center at holiday time, raise money for food for needy families and prepare baskets of personal items for battered women at Interval House.
Students also donate their leftover Halloween candy to children at Fairview Convalescent Center.
Principal Ian Collins said that community service is emphasized at Sowers to help pupils become well-rounded and participate in society.
“It’s one of the things they can do to contribute to others and to feel good about themselves,” he said.
