‘Hoffa’ Nets $350,000 for Downtown Youths

Para Los Ninos and Tripod will share proceeds of $350,000 raised Dec. 11 at a party and premiere of “Hoffa” at the Academy Theatre.

Para Los Ninos serves homeless and impoverished families with children in downtown Los Angeles, providing emergency food and shelter, child care and parenting classes, among other services. Tripod offers special services to deaf and hearing-impaired children up to age 14. “Hoffa” co-star Danny DeVito selected the charities.

Great Beginnings for Black Babies received $10,000 Jan. 6 from BOYS markets, a division of Food 4 Less Supermarkets Inc. The money will help underwrite operational expenses at the agency’s office at 3860 Crenshaw Blvd. The organization is engaged in a media campaign to encourage expectant mothers to seek early and ongoing prenatal care.

Think Globally-Act Locally raised $80,000 at a gala Dec. 19 at the Century Plaza. Funds will primarily benefit the Hunger Project, with a portion also going to the first pediatrics hospital in Haiti, now under construction. The event, chaired by Lorenda Phillips, was attended by 1,000 guests.

California Community Foundation recently awarded grants to a number of agencies: Al Wooten Jr. Youth and Adult Cultural/Education Center, $10,000 to its Youth Outreach Program; American Diabetes Assn., Los Angeles, $15,000 to train-the-trainer program for bilingual volunteers; American Women’s Economic Development Corp., Long Beach, $10,000 to create a chief financial officer position.

Hollywood Park Racing Charities Inc. has announced a $722,700 donation to be shared by 70 nonprofit groups in the Inglewood area. Among the recipients are St. Mary’s Academy of Los Angeles, United Methodist Jr. Basketball League and Youth Employment and Development Project, Hand-in-Hand, Recording for the Blind, Rebuild L.A. and and the Magic Johnson Foundation.

The Associates of the Jewish Home for the Aging raised more than $39,000 for the Maurice Amado Foundation Alzheimer’s Disease Care Unit at a dinner/dance Dec. 10 at Tatou. The new Beverly Hills supper club underwrote the event.
