Lacking inspiration, Wall Street traders are looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday for one of the best forecasts of where the market is going.

A victory by the National Football League’s National Conference, represented by Dallas this year, has traditionally meant the stock market will end the year higher. A win by the American Conference representative, Buffalo, has been followed by a lower close.

The Super Bowl barometer has held true 23 times in 26 years.

“You have to take it with a big grain of salt,” said Jim Schroeder, a market analyst at MMS International. “But it’s interesting to see.”
