A Special ‘Abyss’: A special edition of “The Abyss,” which restores 27 minutes of scenes omitted throughout the 1989 film, will be released Feb. 26 in Los Angeles and New York. The painstaking restoration took almost a year and includes a five-minute tidal wave sequence. “With years of perspective, I see that shortening the film changed its tone and intent,” notes writer-director James Cameron. The special edition, he adds, “is now the film we set out to make five years ago.” Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn star in the underwater science-fiction story.
