A 13-year-old boy was stabbed and listed in serious condition at a hospital after a fight broke out Thursday at Chester W. Nimitz Junior High School in Huntington Park, school officials said.
The stabbing, which occurred between classes, resulted in injuries to the student’s neck, left arm and abdomen, said a spokeswoman for Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. The wounded student’s name was not released.
Another student was detained by campus police as a suspect in the attack, but it was unknown whether a knife was confiscated after the 1:15 p.m. incident, said Faye Banton, assistant principal at the school.
The attack took place only hours before Ruben Zacarias, deputy superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, disclosed that metal detector spot checks scheduled to start this week at some junior and senior high schools had not yet begun. Detectors were ordered to improve campus security throughout the district following the recent shooting death of a student at Fairfax High School.
