From Staff and Wire Reports

Miami Dolphin running back Bobby Humphrey, charged last week in Georgia with cocaine possession, was shot slightly above the knee Monday during an apparent argument in his car on Interstate 65 near Alabaster, Ala.

Humphrey, 26, was released from a hospital after treatment for the wound, which relatives said will not threaten his career.

Alabaster police said Mark Petties, a former teammate of Humphrey at Alabama, was released after Humphrey declined to press charges. Petties said he acted in self-defense.

Humphrey’s attorney, John Swearingen of Columbus, Ga., said Humphrey and Petties attended a weekend athletic-shoe trade show in New Orleans and that Humphrey was returning to Birmingham for a doctor’s appointment when the shooting occurred.

Humphrey was arrested Jan. 31 in a Columbus, Ga., hotel on charges of cocaine possession, aggravated assault and destruction of hotel property after a fight with former Alabama teammate Vantriese Davis. Humphrey, who was released on $12,500 bond, did not appear for his hearing.
