LOS ANGELES : LaBonge Gets $30,107 From City for Council Race

Los Angeles City Council hopeful Tom LaBonge received a $30,107 check from the city Ethics Commission Tuesday--becoming the first candidate in the city’s history to receive taxpayer support for an election campaign.

LaBonge was the first applicant for matching funds to be approved because he has already been certified for placement on the April 20 ballot after submitting his nominating petitions.

LaBonge is one of 15 candidates running for the 13th District seat to be vacated by Michael Woo, who is running for mayor. Voters created a matching funds program, and the city set aside $8 million, in the hopes of reducing the cost of campaigns and the influence of special interest money.
