Burlington Again Trims Staff: Burlington Air Express has eliminated 11 additional positions this week, along with 25 slashed about two weeks ago, as a result of continued restructuring aimed at making the Irvine-based company more efficient, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The positions were eliminated by both layoffs and attrition, although a spokeswoman reached late Wednesday said she was unsure how many workers were idled by the cuts.

With the latest reductions, Burlington has reduced its Orange County office staff by more than 150 positions since June, 1992. The reductions have saved more than $9 million, according to the company.

“Basically, the organization is being streamlined and reorganized,” said spokeswoman Raquel Garcia. It comes as the air freight business has become more competitive. Lower air freight rates have forced reductions in overhead.

Burlington, a subsidiary of the Pittston Co. of Stamford, Conn., employs about 400 workers at its Irvine headquarters and 5,000 nationwide. It had 1992 revenues of about $900 million.
