George Schneider; Retired School Principal

George Schneider, former principal of three San Fernando Valley public schools, has died in El Sobrante, Calif. He was 70.

A former resident of Tarzana, Schneider died Feb. 3 of leukemia, said his daughter, Katie Excoffier of El Sobrante.

Born in Independence, Wis., Schneider left the University of Notre Dame to join the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery at Iwo Jima. He retired as a captain after being wounded and came to Southern California in 1945.

He later finished his bachelor’s degree and earned a master’s degree at UCLA.

Schneider was a history teacher at Reseda High School in the 1950s and was registrar at Cleveland High School in Reseda in the 1960s. He later was boy’s vice principal at both Fremont High School in Watts and Reseda High School. During the 1970s, he was principal at Monroe High School in what was then Sepulveda and Porter Junior High School in Granada Hills.

Schneider later served as principal of Sequoia Junior High School in Reseda. He retired in 1984.

In 1990, he and his wife moved from Westlake Village to the San Francisco Bay Area.

In addition to his daughter, Katie, Schneider is survived by his wife of 40 years, Frances Schneider; sons Andy Schneider of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Jerry Schneider and Jim Schneider, both of San Diego; daughter Betsy Irving of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters Romelle Roosevelt of Pasadena, Phyllis Pittenger of Westlake Village and Ruth Tubbs of Upland, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Private services will be held Saturday in Westlake Village. Donations can be made in Schneider’s name to the Leukemia Society of America, Northern California Chapter, 55 Hawthorne St., Suite 510, San Francisco, Calif. 94105.
