Carnival Will Benefit Youth Shelter

A Caribbean Carnival fashion show is scheduled for Saturday to raise money for the nonprofit Huntington Youth Shelter.

State Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren will be the event’s honorary chairman. But a schedule conflict makes his appearance at the event doubtful, said Ron Shenkman, president of the shelter’s board of directors.

State Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach) and Orange County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder will be present, Shenkman said.

The black-tie optional event will be at the Waterfront Hilton Resort in Huntington Beach at 6 p.m.

The Huntington Youth Shelter’s purpose is to establish, maintain and supervise a home for runaway children.

Located in Central Park, the shelter is expected to be completed next month and be fully operational by midyear, Shenkman said.

Money raised from the event will be used for operating expenses and for direct aid to the youngsters in crisis, Shenkman said.

“It is critical that this event be successful so that we can commence serving the needs of local youth at risk,” Shenkman said. “Our goal is to surpass the success of last year’s sold-out event, which netted $40,000 for the shelter.”

Shenkman said corporate table sponsorships are still available. A limited number of individual tickets are selling for $100 per person, he said.
