A bomb squad from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department defused an explosive device discovered Thursday behind a Thousand Oaks gas station, authorities said.

Deputies were called to Bob’s Mobil gas station on the 2100 block of North Moorpark Road at about 10 a.m. after two employees discovered the device near a wall behind the gas station, police and service station employees said.

The device, a medicine pill container with a wick attached to it, had a small amount of gun powder inside, said Sgt. Keith Parks.

A member of the department’s bomb squad tied a rope around the device and dragged it away about 2 1/2 hours after it was discovered, authorities said. The device was later defused, deputies said.

Authorities were investigating the incident as a possible “juvenile-type prank,” Parks said.
