Texas pitcher Kevin Brown, a 21-game winner last season, lost his salary arbitration case, but Chicago White Sox pitcher Jack McDowell, a 20-game winner, won his.
McDowell was awarded $4 million instead of the $3.15 million offered by Chicago and Brown was given a $2.8-million salary instead of his request for $3.4 million.
Four players avoided arbitration by agreeing to one-year contracts. They were Houston pitcher Pete Harnisch, St. Louis outfielder Felix Jose, Atlanta pitcher Pete Smith and Kansas City outfielder Chris Gwynn.
