Share

More than 14,000 people volunteered time and services to the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts last year.

Next week, 27 of those volunteers will be honored for their efforts. They will receive the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor a local Boy Scout organization can bestow on volunteers.

“We have so many great volunteers. . . . You can see the magnitude of this award,” said Jason Stein, a spokesman for the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts. “These are the cream of the crop.”

Kenneth Zittrer of Lake Forest, for example, who has two sons in the Scouting program, helped organize the Saddleback Valley annual camping trip. He has also helped organize “High Adventure” trips such as rock climbing and back-packing.

Zittrer and the other winners represent the backbone of Scouting, officials said.

“Scouting would not be able to continue without the great support of the volunteers,” Stein said.

The volunteers will receive their awards at the Recognition Dinner on Thursday.

The Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts is the seventh largest in the country. Last year, more than 87,000 children and adults participated in local programs.
