EL SERENO : New Director, Office for Youth Center

Share

The El Sereno Youth Development Corp. has opened an office and appointed a new director to prepare for building a neighborhood youth center.

Raul Caiz, a professional boxing referee, has been named director of the corporation and will also be the center’s director when it is built. Organizers are searching for a site large enough to accommodate a two-story center with a playing field, swimming pool, gymnasium and several classrooms. They said they hope to find a gang-neutral site.

Meanwhile, the corporation has opened an office at 5130 S. Huntington Drive to keep residents apprised of its plans and to receive donations. Already, Caiz said, volunteers have offered services, such as doing electrical work, for the center.

“We opened the office so people know that we’re serious. We don’t want anyone to think that this is just another thing that won’t happen,” he said.

A dinner in January in honor of Councilman Richard Alatorre raised $700,000 toward the center’s construction. Organizers hope to have the center completed by 1996.
