Man, 33, Dies in Collision on Freeway
A 33-year-old Van Nuys man was killed Sunday in a freeway collision that backed up traffic for miles in the Santa Clarita Valley, authorities said.
Carlos Mendoza was a passenger in a car headed south on the Golden State Freeway just north of Magic Mountain Parkway about 1:30 p.m. when the vehicle hit the center divider and ricocheted through traffic lanes, California Highway Patrol Officer E. McCoy said. The car was struck by another vehicle, fatally injuring Mendoza.
Authorities closed off three lanes of the freeway for more than an hour, backing up traffic all the way to Lake Hughes, McCoy said.
It was not known whether Miguel Sanchez, the driver of the car that carried Mendoza, was cited or if the second driver was injured.
