A 10-foot python and an assortment of other reptiles burned to death when their holding tank exploded in flames inside a Silver Strand beach house, fire officials said Monday.
Ventura County firefighters responded shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday to a fire in the 100 block of Sawtelle Avenue, southeast of Port Hueneme. A spokeswoman for the Ventura County Fire Department said a light bulb inside the reptile tank ignited the blaze, which spread to a room in the house.
It took 20 firefighters about an hour to extinguish the blaze, the spokeswoman said.
The fire caused about $100,000 in structural damage to the house. The reptiles were valued at $2,500.
