LOS ANGELES : Mitchelson’s Bail Set at $500,000 in Tax Fraud Case
Bail was set Tuesday at $500,000 for palimony attorney Marvin Mitchelson in the wake of his conviction for tax fraud.
Mitchelson remained in custody on his conviction last week by a Los Angeles federal court jury on four felony counts of tax fraud. Prosecutors said Mitchelson, 64, concealed nearly $2 million in income from tax returns he filed between 1983 and 1986.
Mitchelson, known for his rich and famous clients, complained of chest pains after the verdict was announced and had been held in White Memorial Hospital until Tuesday’s appearance.
While setting the bail, U.S. District Judge William D. Keller ordered Mitchelson to undergo drug testing as a condition of his release. A defense attorney said he expects Mitchelson to be able to post the bail, though he did not know when.
Just before the verdict, Michelson filed for protection from creditors in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
