FISHING / DAN STANTON : Yellowtail Were Plentiful for Holiday Anglers

Anglers were able to take advantage of ideal weather and ocean conditions during the holiday weekend to catch yellowtail at Horseshoe Kelp.

The 22nd Street Landing boat New Hustler found yellowtail during a stop for bass. Using live squid for bait, the anglers aboard the boat caught 52 yellowtail averaging 15 pounds.

The landing’s half-day boat Monte Carlo returned Monday with 31 yellowtail. John Obday of San Pedro won the jackpot with a 15-pound yellowtail.

Los Angeles Harbor’s Sportking had 22 yellowtail and limits of calico and sand bass. Three undersized white seabass were caught and released on the trip.

Long Beach Sportfishing’s Victory and Toronado totaled 33 yellowtail and a black seabass that was released. Mike Blue of Long Beach caught a 17-pound yellowtail

Skiff fishermen drifting near the kelp off Palos Verdes Peninsula have been hooking legal-size white seabass. Most of the fish have been caught early in the morning.

Paul Green of Wilmington caught a 21 1/2-pound white seabass.

Anglers have been catching calico bass, sheephead and rock cod off Catalina and San Clemente islands.

San Nicholas Island continues to be excellent for rock cod in shallow water.

Los Angeles Harbor’s Pacifica, with 25 anglers aboard, returned Monday with 450 rock cod. Gary Moore of Torrance caught a 14-pound lingcod.

Local catches: Ray Patoz of Redondo Beach, aboard the City of Redondo at Rocky Point, caught the whopper of the week, a 44-pound yellowtail.
