Long Beach : Beaches Remain Closed Due to the Sewage Spill
City health officials on Wednesday kept the city’s beaches closed for a fourth day because of high levels of bacteria after a weekend sewage spill.
Daily testing will continue and the beaches will reopen when bacteria levels drop, said Don Cillay, manager of the city’s Bureau of Environmental Health.
About 400,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled Sunday into the Los Angeles River after a corroded, 24-inch sewer pipe failed along Harbor Scenic Drive north of Ocean Boulevard, said Joe Haworth, of the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. The raw sewage, generated by downtown Long Beach, was headed to a treatment plant in Carson.
The Sanitation Districts, which operate the sewer line, installed temporary pipes to bypass the damaged area. The sewer line will be repaired in the next couple of weeks, Haworth said.
