NHL ROUNDUP : Ottawa Still Can’t Win on the Road

Joe Sakic had two goals and one assist as the Quebec Nordiques defeated Ottawa, 6-4, Wednesday night at Quebec, handing the Senators their 28th road loss in as many games.

Mats Sundin contributed one goal and two assists for the Nordiques, and Owen Nolan assisted on three Quebec goals.

The Senators, on goals by Darren Rumble, Norm MacIver and Andrew McBain, led three times as they tried for their first road victory in team history. But they were unable to hold off the Nordiques, who eventually went ahead, 4-3, when Martin Rucinsky scored at 18:12 of the second period.

The game marked the return of Quebec forward Valeri Kamensky, sidelined since Oct. 17 because of a broken right ankle suffered in practice.

Toronto 4, Calgary 2--Nikolai Borschevsky scored twice in the first period at Toronto and the Maple Leafs defeated the Flames for the first time since in three years.

Dave Andreychuk also scored twice as the Maple Leafs won their fourth consecutive game, tying their season-high, and ended Calgary’s eight-game winless streak.

Doug Gilmour had three assists to extend his point-scoring streak to six games. Joe Nieuwendyk and Joel Otto scored for the Flames.

Detroit 3, Tampa Bay 1--Paul Ysebaert’s third-period goal broke a 1-1 tie and led the Red Wings to victory over the Lightning at Detroit.

Vincent Riendeau, playing for the first time since Jan. 2, made 28 saves.

New Jersey 4, St. Louis 3--Claude Lemieux scored two goals, including the game-winner midway through the third period to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Devils have won three consecutive games and have moved into third place in the Patrick Division, one point ahead of the New York Rangers.

Alexander Semak had three assists as he combined with linemates Lemieux and Valeri Zelepukin for three goals and eight points for New Jersey.

Boston 5, Montreal 2--Recently acquired C.J. Young scored two goals to lead the Bruins at Montreal.

Young, in his fifth game since he was acquired Feb. 1 from Calgary for Brent Ashton, tied the game and then put Boston ahead as the Bruins scored three consecutive second-period goals.

Dave Reid also scored two goals, and Ray Bourque had a goal and two assists for Boston.

Buffalo 5, Hartford 3--Donald Audette had a goal and an assist and goaltender Grant Fuhr turned away several third-period shots as the Sabres won at Hartford.

Yuri Khmylev, Brad May, Wayne Presley and Bob Sweeney also scored for the Sabres, who are 6-0-1 against the Whalers this season.

The Whalers got goals from Terry Yake, Geoff Sanderson and Pat Verbeek, who has 300 in his career.
