A would-be burglar was wounded and captured by a woman on his second attempt to break into her Gorman home, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

David Perez, 21, arrested on suspicion of burglary, was in fair condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Peters said.

Lorraine Harris, 51, told deputies that she woke up about midnight Wednesday to the sound of her dogs barking and saw a man trying to get into her house in the 38800 block of Gorman Post Road by pulling on a sliding glass door.

Harris told the man from inside that she was calling authorities, and she thought that he fled. But the man tried again a few minutes later at another door, Peters said.

“Perez walked around to the garage area and pulled open the garage door. He walked into the garage area and confronted her,” Peters said. “Harris, fearing that the suspect was going to attack her, grabbed a loaded .357 handgun and shot Perez once in the right side of his body.”
