Share

Two Ojai Valley men who became stranded Friday during a kayaking trip in the storm-tossed Ventura River were rescued by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies.

Geoff Sollo of Ojai and Rodney Gust of Oak View had begun the trip at Santa Ana Road in Oak View and were headed to the mouth of the Ventura River in Ventura when their kayaks overturned near Casitas Springs, deputies said.

Sollo lost his kayak in the turbulent, debris-filled water and swam to an island in the middle of the river.

Gust initially lost his kayak but he recovered it and swam to shore, deputies said.

A deputy driving by the area at 1:30 p.m. saw the two stranded men and radioed for a helicopter, which lifted them to safety. No injuries were reported.
