Brentwood 4, Cathedral 1--Brentwood’s fast one-touch passing set the pace for two goals early in the match and a Southern Section Division V first-round playoff triumph over Cathedral (8-5-2) Friday.

Cathedral’s young squad was unable to stop the Eagles’ disciplined style of soccer, led by left halfback John O’Brien.

O’Brien, one of eight Californians on the U.S. Olympic Development Team, set up two goals and scored the final tally for the Eagles (13-6).

Eagle left wing Ian Prinn found the back of the net on a perfect pass by O’Brien in the first minute of the game. Striker Matt Newmark followed with two goals in less than 20 minutes to go into the second half.

The Phantoms’ only goal came late in the second half when right-winger Ignacio De La Torre beat the Eagle’s offside trap and tapped a low pass toward striker Roger Lopez. Lopez hit the ball once, and it changed direction and rolled past goalie Brian Rolph.

Phantom goaltender Art Lopez made 12 saves from 22 shots on goal.
