COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Southern California College Rallies, Beats Fresno Pacific

Danin Bryant scored 22 points as Southern California College rallied to defeat host Fresno Pacific, 79-77, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday night.

SCC (17-11, 6-4) trailed by 13 points at halftime.

Eric Carmichael added 15 points for SCC. Fresno Pacific (10-17, 4-7) got 15 points from Ricky Sanchez.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 73, Cal Baptist 62--Agustin Heredia had 21 points to lead Christ College Irvine (15-12, 5-5). D’Andre Brown added 17 points for Irvine.

In National Christian College Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 116, San Jose Christian 110--Charles Ross, a sophomore center who was named MVP of the tournament, scored 41 points and had 12 rebounds for Pacific Christian (22-11), which qualifies for the National Christian College Athletic Assn. championships March 4-6 at Independence Park in Fullerton. Teammate Erick Bajus added 26 points for the Royals.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Nevada 82, UC Irvine 73--Yvonne Catala scored 18 points and Jinelle Williams had 15 points and 11 rebounds for host Irvine (2-20, 1-13). Irvine, which trailed by as many as 21 points, drew within, 63-62, with 5:17 remaining.

However, reserve Tiffany Shaw scored nine of her 13 points, including two three-pointers, in the final five minutes to help the Wolfpack (3-19, 3-13) hold on for the victory. Kelli Dufficy had 18 points to lead six Nevada players in double figures.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 77, California Baptist 50--Gitte Mejer had 23 points and 12 rebounds for host CCI (24-4, 10-0), which held Cal Baptist (6-19, 3-7) to 29% shooting from the field.

Stacey Giem scored 20 points and Stacy Kirch had eight points, 11 assists and 13 rebounds for the Eagles, who will play host the District 3 playoffs next week.

Fresno Pacific 71, Southern California College 49--Tina Demarsh scored 14 points for Southern California College (14-13, 3-7), which had only 18 first-half points. Dana Coates led Fresno Pacific (19-7, 8-2) with 24 points.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Pepperdine 100, Cal State Fullerton 68--Shayla Bradshaw scored a career-high 19 points for Cal State Fullerton (6-15), which was held to 20 first-half points. Ann Abramova added 12 points for the Titans. Aimee McDaniel, formerly of Brea-Olinda High, had 15 points and eight assists to lead a balanced attack for Pepperdine (13-13).

At the Long Beach Relays:

Franke wins two--USC’s Allison Franke, formerly of Canyon High, won the women’s university/open division discus with a throw of 157 feet 2 inches and also won the javelin with a throw of 145-6.

UCLA’s Daniel Niednagel, formerly of Dana Hills, took first in the men’s university/open 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9 minutes 41.1 seconds.

In the men’s triple jump, Alex Norca, competing unattached, jumped 53-5 1/2, nearly four feet ahead of his nearest competitor.

UC Irvine placed second in the women’s 800-meter relay (1:42.2) and third in the men’s relay (1:33.8).
