Sampras May Not Have Stress Fracture, but He’s Still Doubtful for Next Week

Pete Sampras sought a second opinion on his injured right ankle Tuesday, and his agent said Sampras may not have a stress fracture after all.

According to Ivan Blumberg of ProServ, the results of the examination suggest Sampras may have ligament damage, instead of the more serious fracture.

Doctors have prescribed immobilization and rest for Sampras, said Blumberg, who will decide in the next few days if he can play in the Newsweek Champions Cup, which begins Monday.

“It’s possible, but it’s more likely he will take a couple of weeks off,” Blumberg said. “It’s nothing in any way, shape or form that can’t be ready in the next few weeks.”

The outlook for Stefan Edberg, another of Blumberg’s clients, seems to be improving. Edberg, who pulled out of two events with a bad back, is playing doubles in Scottsdale, Ariz., this week.
