Share

The Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to lease 23 portable classrooms to temporarily ease overcrowding.

Assistant Supt. Nitra Brazile said the district plans to install the classrooms at 18 overcrowded sites this academic year.

Michael Klentschy, associate superintendent for instruction, said that the district’s elementary schools are already beyond capacity and that children are being taken from the most crowded sites to the least crowded ones.

About 22,500 students are currently enrolled, and several hundred more are expected next year. The district has space for about 22,000 students.

Board President Elbie J. Hickambottom suggested that the district look into reopening former school sites that have leased to private institutions.

Brazile said the state will pay the cost of leasing the classrooms, while the district will spend $94,000 to prepare all the sites.

In other matters, the board approved a written policy on sexual harassment for students, as required by a new state law. The law permits districts to suspend or expel students for harassment.
