PLATFORM : Making a Difference

Share
MARIA ELENA CHAVEZ works for the Los Angeles Conservation Corps' Human Services Program, which aims to promote understanding by organizing multicultural activities for youths and community groups. She told The Times:

There is a need for a human-services program because there are so many social issues that aren’t addressed. We are here to help communities identify problems and help residents who want to make a difference. For example, we provide information and education to help people deal with gangs, AIDS awareness and other problems.

We are trying to get people of different races and nationalities to understand each other and close cultural gaps. We’ve been organizing throughout Los Angeles through the city-sponsored Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. We go to various neighborhood organizations representing different cultural and economic backgrounds and try to bring them together. They need to understand each other and their cultural differences and communicate.

I don’t feel anything is impossible. To those who are intimidated by the city’s problems, I say we can deal with the obstacles. We have to try to create positive change.
