A convicted drunk driver who escaped from the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho was recaptured later in the day, Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.

Robert Kugler, 33, left his job in a minimum-security laundry area about 1 p.m. after telling another inmate that he was ill and was going to the infirmary, said Sgt. Bob Stoneman. After searching the jail, deputies launched a search by land and air for Kugler about 4 p.m., he said.

Los Angeles County safety police took Kugler into custody about 10:30 p.m. near the Castaic Brick Co. on North Ridge Route in Castaic, Stoneman said. Kugler was taken to the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.
