IRVINE BOXING : Costa Mesa’s Zavala Has to Settle for Main Event on Six-Fight Card
Rudy Zavala figured to be fighting for the WBC junior featherweight title this week but instead must settle for a main-event appearance tonight at the Irvine Marriott.
Zavala (19-1-1) takes on Hector Diaz (20-17) at the Marriott in a 10-round bout. Diaz, a veteran competitor from Mexico, comes in with 15 knockouts.
Zavala, from Costa Mesa, was supposed to be fighting Tracy Harris Patterson for his WBC title but Patterson’s camp called off the bout about a month ago.
It was canceled after Zavala, whom Irvine Marriott promoters are calling “The Costa Mesa Comet” scored a fifth-round knockout over Jerome Coffee in the first week of January.
Todd McPhee, a 12-0 cruiserweight from San Diego, makes the trip north for his first Marriott appearance Thursday. He is scheduled to take on Matthew Brooks (9-6) of Houston.
The first of six scheduled bouts starts at 7:30 p.m. and no one under 16 is admitted.
Tickets--priced at $35, $32, and $25--go on sale today at 10 a.m. in the hotel’s grand ballroom.
