Authorities on Friday identified a man who was shot to death at a South Los Angeles liquor store where police were pelted with rocks and bottles as they tried to cordon off the area.

Rodney Burts, 26, died Thursday night at California Medical Center after a shooting at the liquor store at 54th and Hoover streets. Police said the killing appears to be gang-related.

A crowd of 20 to 50 people pelted police with rocks and bottles, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Sharyn Michelson said. The crowd was dispersed within 20 minutes and one officer suffered a minor injury, she said.

A similar incident was reported Wednesday night as officers were ticketing an illegally parked car near 56th and Hoover. Again, the crowd was quickly dispersed and no arrests were made.

Police say they do not believe the incidents are related or spawned by events surrounding the opening of the federal trial of four LAPD officers accused of violating Rodney G. King’s civil rights.
