Prep Basketball Playoffs / THIRD ROUND : DIVISION I-AA : Capistrano Valley Wins Inside-Outside Contest
Capistrano Valley, with a strong offensive and defensive effort from its front line and eight three-point baskets from outside, dominated Rialto Eisenhower, 69-53, in a Division I-AA quarterfinal game Friday night at Saddleback College.
The Cougars advance to the semifinals for the third time in four years. They will play Long Beach Jordan, a 51-49 winner over Lakewood, Tuesday.
The Cougars (20-9) got another strong effort from senior Corey Kost, who scored a game-high 21 points. Eric Seiffert added nine points and Ted Blinn 10. The trio combined for 23 rebounds.
The three scored 26 of Capistrano Valley’s 32 first-half points to give the Cougars a 32-22 lead.
When Eisenhower (21-7) began to sag in on Capistrano Valley’s inside game, guard Todd Thornton and Brian Scoggin made them pay. The two had five three-point baskets between them.
“Our big guys really played well on both ends,” Cougar Coach Mark Thornton said. “When we couldn’t get the ball inside, Todd and Brian got hot outside. Defensively, we made them take some really bad shots and Eisenhower is a very creative offensive. We had to play well on the defensive end.”
The Eagles made just 19 of 55 shots in the game. Damond Wilkins and Tony Tyler shared scoring honors with 12 points.
