Weiskopf Leads His First Senior Event
Tom Weiskopf, playing in his first Senior PGA Tour competition, shot a five-under-par 67 Saturday to lead all players in the Chrysler Cup, but the United States was in an unaccustomed battle in the team competition.
Weiskopf led the individual stroke-play competition with a two-day total of 11-under-par 133. Meanwhile, the International squad moved to within four strokes in team competition of the United States going into today’s final round at the Tournament Players Club at Prestancia.
Each team selects its lowest five scores from eight players for a daily score. The United States is 28 under par, with the Internationals 24 under. The U.S. team led by nine after the first day.
Weiskopf was two strokes ahead of New Zealand’s Bob Charles (68-67--135) and five ahead of George Archer (65-73--138) and Australia’s Bruce Crampton (70-68--138).
The U.S. has won six of seven Chrysler Cup competitions, including the last five.
“Four shots out is not an overwhelming margin,” Charles said. “We’ve made a competition out of it this year.”
