LAS VIRGENES, CASTAIC : Voters to Decide on 2 School Measures
Voters in two local school districts go to the polls today to decide the fate of a $150 property tax increase to reduce class size and a $20-million bond measure to finance new school construction.
Both measures--one in Las Virgenes and the other in Castaic--require approval by two-thirds of the voters.
In the Las Virgenes Unified School District--which enrolls 10,000 students in Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Westlake Village--voters will cast ballots on Prop. K, a property tax increase that failed by 270 votes in 1991.
The $150 tax hike would be used to reduce class size, hire more teachers and restore elective classes cut over the past several years. The increase would be in effect for four years and could not be extended without another two-thirds vote.
In the Castaic Union School District, money from the $20-million bond measure, Prop. S, would be used to build a new middle school and an elementary school. It would tax homeowners $32.56 per $100,000 of assessed value.
Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Voters with questions can call the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters at (213) 727-1900.
