Terry Mills never scored 41 points in high school or at Michigan.

An offensive night like that in the pros was beyond his wildest dreams.

Mills, however, not only scored 41 points against the Boston Celtics Monday night, he finished it off with a big three-point basket in the final minute to give the Detroit Pistons a 99-95 victory at Auburn Hills, Mich.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Mills said, “but I must have rubbed up against Joe (Dumars) sometime.”

Detroit trailed, 93-91, with a minute to play when Mills, who had made only three three-point shots in 52 games, got the ball on the left wing near the three-point arc.

He calmly stepped back and made his fourth with 55.6 seconds left.

“There was no hesitation, because I was having a great game,” said Mills, who also had nine rebounds.

Mills’ previous best was 28 points, last month against Miami.

Charlotte 110, Utah 107--Larry Johnson scored 28 points and Alonzo Mourning pulled down 22 rebounds at Salt Lake City as the Hornets handed the Jazz its fifth consecutive loss.

Johnson made 10 of 18 shots. Johnny Newman made eight of nine shots and finished with 21 points. Kendall Gill added 19.

Karl Malone led all scorers with 32 points, but missed what would have been the tying jump shot in the final seconds as the Jazz lost its fourth consecutive home game since the All-Star break.

The last time Utah lost four in a row at home was in 1985.

John Stockton added 22 points and 14 assists for the Jazz.

Golden State 131, Philadelphia 118--Chris Gatling returned from his one-game suspension for fighting with the Clippers’ Danny Manning and scored 29 points for the Warriors at Oakland.

Tim Hardaway added 27 points and 19 assists for the Warriors, who handed the 76ers their 11th loss in 13 games.
