Stanford won every race Monday except the 100-yard breaststroke, an event the Cardinal appeared to have a lock on with Lori Heisick going for her fourth consecutive conference title.

But Arizona State freshman Beata Kaszuba, who is from Poland, ended Heisick’s reign at the Pacific 10 women’s swimming championships in Long Beach. With a burst of speed that gave her the lead out of the final turn, Kaszuba won in 1 minute 1.87 seconds, eclipsing Heisick’s 1992 meet record of 1:02.54.

Heisick followed in 1:02.27, her best time unshaved. UCLA freshman Andrea Gaber took third in a personal-best 1:03.64. The 5-foot-11 Kaszuba attributed her 0.40 improvement to the atmosphere.

“If the meet is bigger I get more excited,” she said. “There are more (fans) and better swimmers.”

Kaszuba, who trained at Mission Viejo for 10 months beginning in 1988, decided to attend Arizona State sight unseen.

“I had many offers but I could not go on a recruiting trip,” she said. “I said to myself, ‘OK, I have to go to school. Arizona sounds good. It is warm there and the coach is really nice.’ ”

Stanford senior Lea Loveless broke the other meet record Monday, lowering her 1992 100-yard backstroke mark from 54.00 to 53.90. UCLA’s Kristin Heydanek took second in a school-record 54.54.
