OXNARD : Residents to Join in School Cleanup

Share

Armed with scrub brushes, rakes and other cleaning utensils, a group of Oxnard residents will converge on Oxnard High School today for the school’s second annual spring cleaning project.

The public is invited to join in the cleaning, which is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. and run until noon, said Danny Victorio, the school’s custodial supervisor and one of the project’s organizers.

“We just want the community to really get involved with the schools,” he said. “We want them to be aware of what the schools are going through.”

Victorio said his staff of six custodians can barely keep up with daily cleaning and maintenance at the 2,100-student school. He said the school also cannot afford many of the supplies and tools needed to properly maintain the campus, which includes some buildings more than 50 years old.

“We’re just getting by,” Victorio said. “We need tools. So we’re looking for a few donations. We could use some good used vacuum cleaners.”

He said several members of his work crew, as well as church groups and other community organizations, plan to participate in the cleanup. Two local businesses, House Paper and Coastal Sanitation Supply, will provide cleaning equipment.

Victorio said a similar cleanup project is planned at Camarillo High School on April 3.
