Two people were killed and two others were critically injured Saturday night in a head-on collision that forced Santiago Canyon Road to be closed for four hours, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The accident occurred about 7:35 p.m. just south of a road leading to a county dump. A small pickup truck heading north at speeds up to 85 m.p.h. and illegally passing cars on the two-lane road struck a 1989 Dodge Caravan traveling southbound at 55 m.p.h., according to CHP Officer Angel Johnson.

The driver of both vehicles died at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge was David Feder, 47, of Santa Ana. The pickup truck driver was identified as Hermillo Silva Cabrera, 22, also of Santa Ana.

The pickup truck’s passenger, Angelica Villanueva Leon, 32, of Santa Ana suffered major injuries and was flown to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. Clyde David Stirewalt, 30, of Perris, the passenger in the Dodge Caravan, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital. Both were listed in critical condition Saturday night.

Johnson said the road was closed between Jamboree and Live Oak Canyon roads. Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident.
